Anxiety is a common human emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure. Nearly everyone experiences some anxiety in their life. Anxiety becomes a disorder when ongoing anxiety interferes with daily activities. There are a few different types of anxiety disorders:
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) involves excessive, unrealistic worry that spans across many aspects of life. People with GAD may worry about their health, family, career, or minor matters like chores, car repairs, etc.
- Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear over social situations and interactions. Someone with social anxiety may avoid groups, gatherings, meeting new people, etc.
- Panic disorder involves sudden, unexpected panic attacks marked by racing heart rate, shortness of breath, dizziness, and feeling loss of control. Panic attacks can occur unexpectedly or in response to certain triggers.
- Phobias are marked by intense fear over a specific object or situation, such as heights, flying, or spiders. The level of fear is disproportionate to the actual risk or danger posed by the object or situation.
- Agoraphobia involves fear over situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable. People with agoraphobia often avoid public spaces, traveling, and open areas.
